Academic and research librarians and their institutions derive well-established benefits from librarians conducting research:  progress toward gaining promotion, tenure, and higher salaries; advancement in the profession and recognition; receptivity to change; increased skill in managing complex library operations through systematic study; and better service to and empathy with faculty researchers. We know, however, that these librarians may not be well positioned to conduct research, resulting from any number of barriers. We aim to remove some of the noted barriers (reported lack of time to complete a research project, unfamiliarity with the research process, lack of support for research (both moral and monetary), lack of confidence, discouraging jargon, inadequate education in research methods) with the creation of the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship.

This Institute is designed to bring together a diverse group of academic and research librarians who are motivated and enthusiastic about conducting research but need additional training and/or other support to perform the steps successfully. During the nine-day institute held annually in the summer, participants will receive expert instruction on research design and small-group and one-on-one assistance in writing and/or revising their own draft research proposal. In the following year, participants will receive ongoing moral support in conducting their research and preparing the results for dissemination.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible as an Institute Scholar:

  • Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Applicant must have already completed a graduate program in library and information studies or equivalent (completed by December 1, 2013, or earlier).
  • Applicant must be employed in a single full time position as an academic or research librarian.
  • Applicant must be able to attend the entire Institute, arriving in Los Angeles, CA on June 15, 2014, departing June 27, 2014.

Application Procedures

Applications for the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL) are accepted through the IRDL Digital Commons website (COMING SOON). Applications for IRDL are accepted from December 1, 2013 to February 1, 2014. To submit an application to be considered as an Institute Scholar, please be sure to thoroughly review the information and directions posted on the IRDL Digital Commons website. Keep the following items in mind as you begin your application process:

A completed application will consist entirely of online components (application, CV, personal statement, and letter of support to be submitted online).
The application website will be available as of December 1, 2013. Awards are announced on March 1, 2014 for the inaugural Institute year. Scholars commit to attend by March 31, 2014.

Description of Scholarship Award

Institute Scholars will be provided with a two-week intensive, hands-on classroom learning experience at the Loyola Marymount University, on the topic of research design. The learning experience, travel to and from Los Angeles, CA, accommodations, and food will be supplied to Scholars free of charge. Funding for participants is provided by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Loyola Marymount University.

Scholars will establish a personal learning network, aimed at providing ongoing support beyond their year as an Institute Scholar, offering them the mentoring and motivation they need to be successful researchers, providing benefits to both themselves and to their institutions.
